How Each House May Look

Each house will accommodate eight children and a mama. The following images are from our initial designs. I don't see it changing much from this.  You should get some idea of what the six children's houses will look like. Once these are finished then the plan is to also build a vocational school, clinic and HIV and peace facilities. There is enough space on the site. The last image is an aerial or plan view showing how much space one of these houses will take on the site that we have to work with. Incidentally, the site is completely surrounded by existing small mud hut type houses. I have placed a Google Earth plan next to it which shows the surrounding houses and a proposed layout of all six  of the children's homes in black on the site and the boundary of the site also in black.

We are following the recommended codes here for low rise residential construction detailing to resist earthquakes specifically related to  the seismicity of the location in Burundi. This requires a lot of steel bar reinforced concrete bond beams. Rain is in abundance here so water will be collected in brick built tanks. Compressed earth blocks will be made on site for the structural walls which will give a very natural look to the houses in their to their surroundings.

Stabilised Soil Blocks (SSBs)

We are also looking to purchase a Soil Block Press or more as these can provides an answer to affordable housing, water storage and sanitation needs at community level in Africa.

Stabilised Soil Blocks (SSBs) are strong, economical blocks made from a mixture of sub-soil and a small quantity of cement. Almost any soil that contains clay and sand can be used to make between 90 and 150 SSBs per 50kg bag of cement.

The production of high quality blocks, uniform in size and shape with defined edges and smooth surfaces, makes construction easier.

It is particularly suitable in areas where cement is costly and difficult to obtain.

Stabilised Soil Blocks are tested and approved by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KS012070) as permanent walling materials. These blocks have been used to construct buildings, water tanks, pit latrines, wells and septic tanks all over East Africa.

Here are a few pictures to give you an idea of what they look like. You may want to donate towards the purchase of these:

Sponsor a Roof

We have started to design the individual buildings that the children will be living in. We expect to have about six houses on the site initially so we now have a good idea as to what materials will be required for each house. Timber is very scarce in Burundi so you may want to consider sponsoring or donating to this part so that we can take it with us in the container. Through time I will also add to this list any other building materials and quantities that we could also take with us rather than buy in the country. The lengths that I have specified are standard length and ideal but shorter lengths will also work. There is a 'Donate' button at the top of this page.

* 150mm by 50mm Off Saw @ 4.8m lengths = 65no Lengths per House for Main Roof Rafters.
* 50mm by 50mm Off Saw = 260lm or @ 4.8m lengths = 64no Lengths per House for Main Roof battens.
* 6mm x 1200mm x 2400mm Sheets of Hard Board for Ceilings = 36no Sheets per House for Main Roof battens.

If we take enough of this timber for all six houses then if we stack it up in a 20' container it will almost fill the container. This is what it would look like.

I guess that we would have to take a 40' container if we want to be able to take anything else with us but the timber is going to be the hardest thing to get a hold of in Burundi so this is one of the main materials that I want to take and would appreciate help with.
