* About Burundi
About Burundi
Burundi is one of the world's poorest nations and is now rebuilding following civil war since 1972.
Burundi-outline-small
Burundi has an estimated population of around 8 million, approximately half of whom are aged 14 or less. The effects of AIDS and cival war has had a significant effect on the demographics of the country.

There is now peace since elections in 2005, but the country still faces the formidable challenges of reviving a shattered economy and of forging national unity with up to 500,000 refugees now returning from camps in Tanzania and Kenya.

Week 30

Each week we introduce you to the children of Hope Centre Burundi. We upload a picture of one child and give you their story.

Lydia Irakoze

Lydia's Story

Lydia is 5 years old.

In 2005 Lydia's parents were returning home from work when rebels stopped and set fire to the bus that they were travelling in. Both her parents died.

As there were no other relatives some neighbours, who also attend Pastor Leonard's church, called him and asked for his help. The following day he went and collected Lydia.

Until Hope centre is ready, she is now living with Pastor Leonard's friends in Kamenge. Lydia is also in her first year of primary school.

Update - Funds available to continue work on Hope Centre:

A little bit of good news here. We have heard that some more donations have been received by Mission International. We haven't been informed yet as to exactly how much, however this should allow us to continue a little longer on the project. Please keep praying about this.

The roof work begins:

This week our workmen were given the challenge to fabricate the roof for the first house. We had already made the trusses so these were located fairly quickly:

I have worked on some high scaffolding towers in the past but, even though I was only a couple of metres above the ground, I couldn't help wondering if the single 4" nail securing the timbers together was going to hold all our combined weights.

Believe it or not but this scaffolding is better quality than you would normally find here in Burundi. These tree posts are new but often you see posts that have been reused many times over and then towering three or four storeys up the side of new buildings.

The roof structure is almost ready to receive it's final sheeting layer. Once the roof is covered over the work can continue on the interior of the building.

We also received some encouraging pictures and messages from a few of the primary 4 children that attend the Sunday school at our church in Westhill:
