We have experienced good things and not so good things this week. Val had paid a deposit in June to a travel agent so that we would get the best possible prices for flights back to the UK over Christmas. She attempted to pay the balance this week but even though she phoned the agent for several days she didn't manage to get through. She made a few inquiries and discovered that the company has ceased trading. As well as loosing the deposit we have also lost the possibility for getting good ticket prices. Thankfully our loses will be covered by the credit card company and new flights have been arranged. On the up side we will now be home for an additional four days.
On a more positive note we have received confirmation that a sizable donation is going to be made to the Hope Centre project which I believe will be well over £10,000. I will keep you posted on this when the funds come in. This is very encouraging news.
Also, the additional block press that was donated recently has now arrived on site. This will speed up block production allowing the walls of the houses to be built within our time scale. This will also provide even more work for the members of the community.
Here you will see the new press and Vincent, our site supervisor, preparing it for use:
Each of the house foundations are being filled up and prepared for their new concrete floors:
Blocks are now having to be moved around the site to make way for even more new blocks.
Next to the waste tank new foundations are being put in for what will be a small outside building for a toilet, shower and sink that will be used by helpers that are employed at the orphanage. Once again what you are seeing is the level that the finished floor will be located and most of the concrete walls that you see will be underground eventually:
You saw the soak away pictures. This is one of the soak aways that has been built up to ground level and will be capped with a concrete lid. The brickies and cement workers take a lot of care to get a good finish:
We introduced two more huts this week. The first one is for a site office and the second one is for the additional security night guard:
Today we had a welcome visit from Jean Samandari, the local administrator. I had the pleasure of giving him a guided tour around the site:
On site recently we have had some rain which turns the ground into mud but the sun very quickly dries it out and it looks pretty cool as it cracks:
And lastly, here a couple of pictures of our boys enjoying a swim in the dark. Beneath them is a very large shark but thankfully this one is only painted onto the bottom of the pool:
