* About Burundi
About Burundi
Burundi is one of the world's poorest nations and is now rebuilding following civil war since 1972.
Burundi-outline-small
Burundi has an estimated population of around 8 million, approximately half of whom are aged 14 or less. The effects of AIDS and cival war has had a significant effect on the demographics of the country.

There is now peace since elections in 2005, but the country still faces the formidable challenges of reviving a shattered economy and of forging national unity with up to 500,000 refugees now returning from camps in Tanzania and Kenya.

Week Twelve's Work is Complete

(click to show/hide)

All the main foundation walls for all six houses are in place and up to floor level. We are now putting in the smaller foundation walls that are required for the verandas. The main tanks are being extended up from the  existing ground level to what will be the new ground level and all the man holes are being finished off.

Here you will see the bricky with his nicely finished man hole and preparing the concrete covers.

In this image the molds for the larger concrete caps used on the septic tanks are being formed.

The inside of the main septic tanks need to be well sealed. The brickies here manage to apply cement render and finish to a smooth high polish with very basic tools.

Just another image showing the many blocks that have been produced so far:

Anytime that tools and materials are brought into the country taxes have to be paid but it is possible to obtain exoneration from the government. It has taken a few weeks but we finally received a check from the government for the taxes.

At the same time we have also received an official number that gives 'Hope Centre Burundi' charitable status within Burundi. This will be a big help when applying for exoneration in the future:

Last evening we played a game of Monopoly that we brought with us:

I make pancakes every Saturday morning now. This picture was taken this morning:

Also taken this morning is a picture of Val watching the heavy rain from our veranda:
