* About Burundi
About Burundi
Burundi is one of the world's poorest nations and is now rebuilding following civil war since 1972.
Burundi-outline-small
Burundi has an estimated population of around 8 million, approximately half of whom are aged 14 or less. The effects of AIDS and cival war has had a significant effect on the demographics of the country.

There is now peace since elections in 2005, but the country still faces the formidable challenges of reviving a shattered economy and of forging national unity with up to 500,000 refugees now returning from camps in Tanzania and Kenya.

   House No. 4

We have received some more new images from Hope Centre. Some of them have been taken at a low resolution and are lacking in detail but you should still be able to see how things are progressing.

It's great to see house number four almost complete:

   Storm Damaged Fence

You will probably have noticed in one of our previous reports that Hope Centre have recently had very heavy rains. As a result of this the temporary fence has been damaged. We put out an email to all the members of Hope Centre website and the mailing list requesting financial support. Several of you responded within just a few hours and donated all that was needed to make the necessary repairs. Here are some images showing the damage to to fence. You can see that they have been using old cement bags and bits of hardboard to cover the holes:

Work has now begun on repairing the fence and as when we receive pictures of the finished repairs we will post them here. Here is one image showing the start of the repair work:

   Chicken Farm

Here are some new images of the chickens that Hope Centre are farming. Unlike the chickens that we have here in the UK, speaking from experience, you won't find much meat on the birds, however it is great to see how many chickens they have managed to farm.

   Banana Trees

Almost a year ago we saw these banana trees planted. They were just very small seedlings but now look at how they have grown and the bountiful crop of bananas that they are producing

   Hope Centre Children Play

The children playing in and around the orphanage grounds:

   Hope Centre Children Work

Both the younger and the older children are being taught how to work. Here is Sara (Pastor Leonard's daughter) sweeping the door step. The last image shows how they dry their clothes. This is the most common way to dry clothes in Burundi. They dry very quickly in the African sun:

Administrator Comment Burundi Visit August 2010
We are hoping to take a small team to Burundi in August 2010 to do further work on Hope Centre. This will depend on the political situation being stable, as there is some uncertainty about the outcome of the elections planned for the end June 2010. At the moment, however, we are making plans to visit, so please let us know if you would be interested in joining us then. We can be contacted at this email address (Click on the address) admin@HopeCentreBurundi.com

Update So far we have three couples and one other person that have expressed an interest in going on the trip.

Please Remember

We don't want to forget about Hope Centre and it's ongoing needs for funds to keep the building work going but now, more importantly, we need to make sure that having built the houses they have enough money to live in them and be able to employ the mamas and buy the necessary food etc.

Continued support still required:

Can I just say that it is great how many of you have donated or been involved with this project in some way however there is still much to be done and, even after the houses are complete, there is still the need for a vocational school and clinic in the Gatumba community. This, however, only scratches the surface of the problem here in Burundi so please encourage many more people to get on board and find ways to help where they can. This requires a lot of sacrifice with your time and money but every little bit of help goes a long way.

Please continue to give of your time and money to this project and other projects like this.
