* About Burundi
About Burundi
Burundi is one of the world's poorest nations and is now rebuilding following civil war since 1972.
Burundi-outline-small
Burundi has an estimated population of around 8 million, approximately half of whom are aged 14 or less. The effects of AIDS and cival war has had a significant effect on the demographics of the country.

There is now peace since elections in 2005, but the country still faces the formidable challenges of reviving a shattered economy and of forging national unity with up to 500,000 refugees now returning from camps in Tanzania and Kenya.

We are hoping to take a small team to Burundi in August 2010 to do further work on Hope Centre. This will depend on the political situation being stable, as there is some uncertainty about the outcome of the elections planned for end of June 2010. [

Administrator Comment Hope Centre Report for 19th December 2009

Children Unwell.

We have some good news and some not so good news this week.

Apparently there is a malaria pandemic in Burundi just now and many people are dying from it. 10 of the Hope Centre children now have malaria, a few are quite ill.  So please pray that the children who are ill will recover quickly and that Pastor Leonard will be able to cope.

Please also pray for Pastor Leonard and his wife Jolie (who is pregnant). This must be a difficult time for them with ten children ill and a new baby on the way.

Vegetables and More Vegetables.

These pictures were sent to us this morning and they were also taken earlier this morning so they are as up-to-date as we can get.

I just love this picture. It says a lot about Hope Centre and how it has progressed in the last year. This is Elvis with some of the freshly picked onions from that Hope Centre are growing.

To the right of Elvis is house number four which is at a very advanced stage.

To the left are the new banana trees. These were planted less than a year ago when we were still in Burundi. Then the tree plants were only a few inches tall and now look at them. At lot of good has happened in a short time. What you are seeing is the result of your generosity in the giving of your time and money. A little goes a long way:

We are hoping to take a small team to Burundi in August 2010 to do further work on Hope Centre. This will depend on the political situation being stable, as there is some uncertainty about the outcome of the elections planned for end June 2010. At the moment, however, we are making plans to visit, so please let us know if you would be interested in joining us then. We can be contacted at this email address (Click on the address) admin@HopeCentreBurundi.com

Update So far we have three couples and one other person interested that have expressed an interest in going on the trip.

Please Remember

We don't want to forget about Hope Centre and it's on going needs for funds to keep the building work going but now, more importantly, we need to make sure that having built the houses they have enough money to live in them and be able to employ the mamas and buy the necessary food etc.

Continued support still required:

Can I just say that it is great how many of you have donated or been involved with this project in some way however there is still much to be done and, even after the houses are complete, there is still the need for a vocational school and clinic in the Gatumba community. This, however, only scratches the surface of the problem here in Burundi so please encourage many more people to get on board and find ways to help where they can. This requires a lot of sacrifice with your time and money but every little bit of help goes a long way.

Please continue to give of your time and money to this project and other projects like this.[/admin]
