* About Burundi
About Burundi
Burundi is one of the world's poorest nations and is now rebuilding following civil war since 1972.
Burundi-outline-small
Burundi has an estimated population of around 8 million, approximately half of whom are aged 14 or less. The effects of AIDS and cival war has had a significant effect on the demographics of the country.

There is now peace since elections in 2005, but the country still faces the formidable challenges of reviving a shattered economy and of forging national unity with up to 500,000 refugees now returning from camps in Tanzania and Kenya.

We are hoping to take a small team to Burundi in August 2010 to do further work on Hope Centre. This will depend on the political situation being stable, as there is some uncertainty about the outcome of the elections planned for July 2010.

Administrator Comment Hope Centre Report for 11th December 2009

The work on the fourth house is progressing well and this week we have received some more images from Hope Centre of the workers and some of the children.

This child has obviously been given the task of cleaning the concrete at the entrance to the house but I see that she is using the brush that was left behind which is normally connected to a water hose for cleaning vehicles:

One of the older boys doing his homework at the tables and chairs that were purchased as a result of the funds raised by the children from Crombie and Midmar primary schools in Aberdeenshire Scotland:

Pastor Leonard is obviously proud of his young daughter Sarah:

It looks like cleanup time or weeding:

The new ceilings are being created in house number four. The work is being carried out to a good standard:

Some of the walls in house four are being cement rendered:

It's great to see Vincent back on the job. He was, and still is, our site supervisor and has been a important part of the success of the Hope Centre building project. Unfortunately we can only employ him when the funds are available so please keep giving to the project. As well as completing the final two houses it would also be good to look at starting work on the the next main phase of the project which is to build the vocational school and clinic in the Gatumba community:

It's also good to see Antonio back on the job. He was the first to start making the blocks and after this he moved onto the house wiring. Having learned this new skill Vincent has obviously brought him back to wire house number four:

Please Remember

We don't want to forget about Hope Centre and it's on going needs for funds to keep the building work going but now, more importantly, we need to make sure that having built the houses they have enough money to live in them and be able to employ the mamas and buy the necessary food etc.

Continued support still required:

Can I just say that it is great how many of you have donated or been involved with this project in some way however there is still much to be done and, even after the houses are complete, there is still the need for a vocational school and clinic in the Gatumba community. This, however, only scratches the surface of the problem here in Burundi so please encourage many more people to get on board and find ways to help where they can. This requires a lot of sacrifice with your time and money but every little bit of help goes a long way.

Please continue to give of your time and money to this project and other projects like this.[/admin]
